Listening in English Practice Lesson – Short Story

Do you want to practice listening in English? Listen to the story and answer the questions to see how well you understood what you heard. First, choose your level and then follow the instructions.

Instructions for the Listening Practice Exercise

If you are a beginner:

  • Listen to the slow version of the recording.
  • Replay the recording as many times as you need to.
  • Answer the questions.
  • Listen to the recording one more time, this time looking at the PDF of the text.
  • Check your answers. If you made a mistake, try to find the answer in the PDF text.

If you are at the intermediate level:

  • Listen to the fast version of the recording.
  • Replay the recording two times OR listen to the slow version of the recording.
  • Answer the questions.
  • Listen to the recording one more time (either fast or slow), this time looking at the PDF of the text.
  • Check your answers. If you made a mistake, try to find the answer in the PDF text.

If you are at the upper-intermediate level:

  • Listen to the fast version of the recording.
  • Replay the recording once.
  • Answer the questions.
  • Listen to the recording one more time, this time looking at the PDF of the text.
  • Check your answers. If you made a mistake, try to find the answer in the PDF text.

If you are at the advanced level:

  • Listen to the fast version of the recording.
  • Answer the questions.
  • Listen to the recording one more time.
  • Check your answers. If you made a mistake, try to find the answer in the PDF text.

  1. What’s the most common weather at the campsite? A. Sunny B. Foggy C. Rainy D. Windy
  2. What animals were in the woods? A. Foxes B. Wolves C. Mountain lions D. Bears
  3. How many things did the speaker get from the car? A. 1 thing B. 2 things C. 3 things D. 0 things
  4. Who had green eyes? A. The speaker B. The bear C. The speaker’s brother D. The speaker’s father

  2. D. Bears, “because there were bears in the forest.” Woods = Forest
  3. B. 2 things, “I brought both of them with me.” Both is used for two things – in this case the lantern and a candle.
  4. C. The speaker’s brother, “those emerald eyes belonged to my sibling.” Sibling = brother or sister
