What is LingoAce?

LingoAce is an online teaching platform based in Singapore. LingoAce students are between the ages of 4 and 15 years old and you can teach ESL and ELA on the platform.

It’s also possible to teach math classes on LingoAce, but this post will focus on teaching English. There are over 10,000 students from around the world taking classes on LingoAce.

Classes are 1:1 and are either 25 or 55 minutes long. Teaching materials are provided and you’ll teach on LingoAce’s interactive teaching platform.

Pay starts at $14 per hour for ESL/ELA classes and your pay increases the more classes you teach. You can earn up to $20 per hour and there are seasonal incentives from time to time. Math classes pay more than ESL/ELA classes.

I applied in October 2024 and had bookings within 2 days of getting hired. If you open slots during Peak Hours you are more likely to get bookings.

Apply to Teach Online on LingoAce

I applied to teach with LingoAce in October 2024 and the application was very quick and easy. Let’s walk through the application step by step.

How to Apply to teach online with LingoAce

LingoAce Application Step One: Basic Info

Click here to begin your LingoAce application

Fill out your full name, email address, and current location.

For the “where did you hear from us” section, please select “LingoAce Referring Teacher” and add my referral code Jamie Ga.

Upload a form of ID like a driver’s license, passport, identity card, etc. and answer a question about where your bank is located (this will ensure you can be paid.)

Step Two: Education and Teaching Experience

You’ll select your highest level of education (bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate, etc.) and upload a copy of your degree or transcript.

Next, select which teaching certificate you have such as a state teaching license, TEFL, TESOL, CELTA, etc. Upload a picture of your certificate.

If you don’t have a TEFL certificate yet, you can complete a course online with The TEFL Academy in only a few weeks. Use code ESL365 at checkout for an extra 10% off.

Answer how many years of tutoring, teaching, or mentoring experience you have and which platforms you’ve taught ESL on (VIPKid, Cambly, etc.)

Step Three: Teacher Profile

Upload a photo that will be used for your avatar on the site. It should follow these rules:

  • Photo should be in the style of a headshot
  • Look directly at the camera and center yourself in the frame
  • Smile in the photo
  • Have a simple, bright background (I used Canva to create a solid colored background)
  • Photo should be in color and larger than 250 x 250 pixels

Self-Introduction Video for the LingoAce Teacher Profile

You will need to film a 30-60 second intro video that will be used for the application process as well as shown to families.

In your video, talk about:

  • Your name, where you’re from, your qualifications and experience, any teaching specialties, and your teaching style and methods
  • Film in a quiet place with a tidy, educational-looking background and share some fun facts about yourself

My Tips for Your LingoAce Intro Video

30-60 seconds isn’t a long time! I recommend writing out some bullet points of what you would like to say and thinking about what families and students are looking for. This video will help them decide to sign up for your classes (or not!), so take some time to think about what you’ll say.

Keep your language simple and inviting. Practice several times and check your sound and lighting. You can use Canva to edit your video.

Include a “call to action” at the end of the video like “book a class with me” or “I hope to see you in my classroom” to help them take action.

The final step of step three is to write a self-introduction which will go up on your profile. I wrote out a similar script to my video and was accepted.

LingoAce Application – Demo Lesson

In a little under 24 hours, I got an email that said I had passed the first stage and was invited to do a 3-minute demo lesson. I was given 2 days to complete my demo lesson. Now, you’ll complete a second form where you upload your demo video.

LingoAce Demo Lesson Options

Option 1: If you are currently teaching kids on an online platform, you can submit a 3-minute snippet of a previously taught and recorded class. Note: you cannot use a class where you are teaching adults.

Option 2: Alternatively, you can create a video using the LingoAce slides and pretending to teach a student. This is the option that I chose.

I downloaded the slide deck and chose a few slides to focus on since the video needs to be 3 minutes long. I chose a name for my student and practiced a few times, following the teaching notes on the slides.

For the LingoAce demo video, it isn’t necessary to show the slides. I used my camera to film myself teaching while I went through the slides on my computer. You can use your webcam or a phone to film.

If you prefer, you can also use the LingoAce demo room to film your video. Howver, this would require you to record your screen, so I recommend keeping it simple and just filming yourself unless you are tech savvy.

Before filming your demo video, go through the “Tips to get a Pass in the Demo phase” listed at the bottom of the demo video application form. There’s information on your background setting, camera setup, lighting, dress code, and classroom conditions. There are also some tips for your energy and engagement, using TPR, reward systems, how you deliver content, and communicating with your student.

I Got Hired to Teach Online with LingoAce

After submitting my demo video, I received an email in less than 24 hours that I had been accepted to teach on LingoAce. I got my login credentials and some information about teaching on the platform.

Once you are hired, you’ll get some onboarding information via email and you can also sign up for a paid onboarding training session.

I immediately opened a few teaching slots and got my first students in the following 2 days.

What Teaching on LingoAce is Like

It’s easy to schedule classes on LingoAce. You simply open slots on your calendar and wait for bookings. You can see which time slots are more in demand and are more likely to get booked. During your first 2 weeks teaching on LingoAce, you can earn an extra $2 for any time slots that you open during Peak Hours whether they are booked or not up to a specific amount.

The LingoAce teaching platform includes the lesson slide deck which is pre-loaded for each lesson, the ability to use the whiteboard, tools that you and your students can use to draw and write on the slides, the ability to share your screen, and more. I found the platform easy to navigate and use.

After each lesson, you will need to write a short report. This is why lessons are only 25 or 55 minutes in a 30 or 60 minute time slot. There are also short homework assignments that you may be asked to grade from time to time.

Overall, getting hired to teach on LingoAce was quick and easy. If you’re looking to add another online ESL teaching platform that actually has students, I recommend applying to LingoAce.
